Introducing the EUPL

I was very intrigued to learn about the European Union Public License today. Having a government-drafted and supported open source license is breaking new ground as far as I know.

I found in particularly interesting that they drafters selected the Eclipse Public License as one of the licenses they will be compatible with. That is a wonderful endorsement of the EPL, and a recognition of Eclipse’s adoption in Europe.

I wonder if the European Commission will be seeking OSI approval?

  1. Mike, a body like the European Commission cannot directly seek for the approval to the OSI. OSI is a non profit organisation managed by individuals. The European Commission or any other National organisation can’t agree to be endorsed and maybe rejected by such organisation.Independently of that fact, the answer is Yes. The EUPL will pass the OSI approval and certainly be listed as an OSI’ recognised open source licence. It should happen in the next month and maybe before mid 2008 as all the material is already ready ;-)Abdelkrimhttp://blog.i14y.net
